Only training course providers who appear on this site are accredited by the National Council of Psychotherapists. Should you have any doubts about your training provider, please contact us for verification. The NCP do not warrant any Accredited Course and it is up to each individual to ascertain that any course of study is right for them. Each prospective student should make themselves fully aware of the contract that they will sign with the Course Provider. They should also be aware that this contract is solely with the Course Provider and is NOT with the NCP

Statement on Training Courses

 

There is currently no statutory regulation of the practice of psychotherapy, hypnotherapy or counselling in the U.K. and anyone may refer to themselves under these titles. There is no legislation to prevent this and none is presently envisaged by the EC. Their position is the same as that of the British Government ---- they would prefer each of the alternative therapies to organise into single bodies, which would become self-regulating.

Several umbrella organisations maintain registers of therapists of various types but the British Medical Association's publication "Complementary Medicine -- New Approaches To Good Practice" (1993), quotes the Government's stance on umbrella bodies, that ---

.... given the diversity, practice and aspirations of those professions........ we now believe very firmly that it must be for each therapy group to determine it’s own development".

Virtually all training courses in psychotherapy and hypnotherapy are in the private sector. Those that have University recognition (usually in psychotherapy) normally lead to an MA degree. Some qualifications are accredited by examining bodies who may award certificates or diplomas.

Many courses require the student to be in personal therapy (some for the whole of their training) which adds considerably to the cost. Some require additional fees for supervision or students' clinical work, which again adds to the overall costs.

 

There are many "orientations" in psychotherapy and differences between counselling and psychotherapy. We recommend that prospective students should obtain relevant books (perhaps from main public libraries with the help of the Librarian) on the various approaches before deciding which appeals to them most.

 

NVQs: Over the past few years the Government has imposed a status on to each job in the country, therapy and counselling being no exceptions. For this reason, relevant bodies are coming together to try to establish criteria in order to achieve the best award possible for the profession. This is a very difficult task as training can range from a few weekends to several years.

 

The National Council is actively involved in setting standards in the U.K., maintaining close liaison with relevant training organisations and professional bodies. The training courses approved by the National Council count towards Licentiate Membership in the National Council itself. Approved courses are obliged to meet requirements regarding minimum number of classroom training hours, supervision during and after training, opportunities for group interaction, the chance for students to experience and practise the type(s) of therapy(ies) taught on the course and there are regulations regarding minimum number of core staff, complaints procedures, continual assessment, Code of Ethics, insurance and feedback systems.

 

N.B. Prospective students are strongly advised to consider the type of training they are seeking, then gather as many brochures / prospectuses as possible for comparison before making a final decision.

There are currently four grades of membership;

Affiliate (ANCP); Licentiate (LNCP); Full (MNCP); and Fellow (FNCP).

Most successful applicants are accepted initially as Licentiate Members, after which, further casework must normally be presented to reach the grade of Full Member. The title of Fellow cannot be applied for but is awarded for outstanding service to the Council and is made at the discretion of the Committee.

Application Fees and Annual Subscriptions

The non-returnable application fee to the National Council of Psychotherapists is a single payment of £25.00 and a cheque in this sum, made payable to the NCP and addressed to the Membership Secretary, at the Head Quarters address, should accompany all application forms.

The annual subscription to the NCP is £70.00, payable only upon acceptance.
